There is no doubt that we all need comedy in our lives. I mean could you imagine a world without comedy? Since the beginning of the human race there has always been comedy, someone or a group of people setting out to make others laugh. And if laughter is the best therapy then these people that make us laugh should have the title doctor, because just like actual doctors we couldnt live without those that provide comedy.

The comedy film genre is one of the oldest genres in the history of movie making. Many of the early silent films were comedy presented in the way of slapstick and Burlesque which was good for visual comedy, which was just as well because the movies had no sound. The silent comedy genre produced legendary stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd who helped to launch the US film industry into the major movie making machine that it is today.

Today the comedy genre is broken down into lots of different types of comedy and the different types of comedy will appeal to different types of people. These are some of the main types of comedy movies.

    Comedy of Manners:

This type of film will bring the comedy across a verbal and witty way. This will be gentle comedy not farce. The comedy generally depicts and often satirises the life of upper class members of society. Some films which fit into this genre are

The Way of the World (William Congreve)

The Importance of Being Idle (Oscar Wilde)

    Private Lives (Noel Coward)

    Fish Out of Water:

The Fish out of Water style comedy will be based around the main character (or characters) finding themselves in an environment that is alien to them. The comedy usually comes from character/s obvious ill at ease in the new environment. Some films in this genre are

Some Like it Hot (Billy Wilder)

    Tootsie (Sydney Pollack)

    White Chicks (Keenen Ivory Wayans)

    Spoof Comedy:

Spoof comedy also known as a parody are films that employ sarcasm, stereotyping, and making a mockery of other films to bring across the laughs. Some films that fit into this genre are

    Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks)

    Airplane (David Zucker)

    Scary Movie (Keenen Ivory Wayans)

    Black Comedy:

This type of comedy generally covers the more serious subjects in life that wouldnt normally be seen as humorous. Such things as drug abuse, madness, death are all treated as humorous. This type of comedy doesnt usually appeal to the masses. Some popular films in this genre are

    Death Trap (Sydney Lumet)

History of the World Part One (Mel Brooks)

    Pulp Fiction (Quinten Tarentino)

    Romantic Comedy:

As the name of this genre implies, the comedy in this type of film is derived from events surrounded two people who are romantically involved or are destined to be romantically involved. These types of films are generally viewed by couples or groups of women.

The Seven year Itch (Billy Wilder)

    Pretty Woman (Garry Marshall)

Theres Something About Mary (Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly)

There are other types of comedy out there and people will have their own preference as what type of comedy makes them laugh. But these days there are no shortage of entertainers and films to make us laugh.

Laughter has been proven to have many benefits on the body, including strengthening the immune system, boosting energy and protect against the damaging effects of stress. Laughter and humour is a great medicine and it is free and easy to use.

It seems fitting to end this with a few comedy quotes which I found and that made me laugh. Hopefully they will do the same for you. Thanks for reading.

    Airplane (1980)

Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?

Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.

Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.

    40 Year Old Virgin (2005)

Jay: Nastiest shit you've ever done? I'm talkin' about *nasty*!

Andy Stitzer: Ahh... wow. So many stories are running through my head right now.

    [pauses, then lies]

Andy Stitzer: I dated this girl for a while. She was really a... nasty freak. She just loved to get down with sex all the time. It was like... anytime of day, she was like, 'Yeah, let's go! I'm so nasty!' And I'd be nailing her and she'd be like, 'Oh, you're nailing me! Cool!'

    Funny People (2009)

Ira Wright: I masturbate so much with hand cream; I forget people use it for shit other than masturbating. Literally, when I'm in public and I see someone pull out hand cream, I'm like 'This guy's about to jerk off!'

    The Other Guys (2010)

Terry Hoitz: Your farts aren't manly.

    Allen Gamble: Are you serious?

Terry Hoitz: They sound like a baby blowing out birthday candles.
