Cancer of the colon or rectum is known as colon or colorectal cancer. It grows in the digestive system from polyps that initially are benign, but that over time mutate into a dangerous tumor. The cells of cancer occupy and destroy nearby tissue, and may break away to form new tumors in other parts of the body, a process termed metastasis.
