In age, when energy has become one the basic requirements, it is important to save energy by any means. You can save a large amount of energy by using fluorescent lamps instead of traditional incandescent bulbs. These fluorescent light bulbs and fluorescent tubes consume 20-40% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb. Moreover, these lamps come in wide range of color temperatures which allow you to customize according to your requirements. Though many of these bulbs fit into the same light fixtures as the traditional bulbs, there are many other models that require different fixtures. Read below given guide to help you purchase the right light bulb to light up your home.

Some factors to be considered in case of fluorescent lamps include types and configurations, color, lumens and watts, cost and savings.

While shifting to other types of bulbs, most people do not want to invest in new light fixtures. When choosing the fluorescent bulbs and tubes, make sure they fit well in the existing fixture. These bulbs either have pin-based configuration or have the screw-based configuration. Screw-based configuration is designed for incandescent bulbs.

For large rooms and commercial installations, fluorescent tubes are right options. They are available in linear, U-shaped and circline designs, bi and 4-pin configurations. With tube fluorescent installations, an electronic ballast is required that regulates the flow of electricity.

Linear tubes are available in different 6-96”. They are designed with code comprising with T (for tube) followed by the relative size. For instance T2 – 1/4” diameter tube, used in specialty fixture, T4 – 1/2” diameter tube, used in specialty fixtures, T4 – 1/2” diameter tube, used in specialty fixtures.

CFL or compact fluorescent light bulbs come in a range of shapes and sizes which makes it easier to replace most incandescent bulbs with their CFL counterpart.

When choosing a bulb, look at its power and the amount of light it gives off. Power is rated in watts and amount of light is rated in lumens. Lumens means amount of light given off by the light source as compared to the amount of energy. If an incandescent bulb gives off 17-20 lumens per watt, a comparable fluorescent lamp gives off 90 lumens per watt. To find the most energy efficient bulb, check the lumen to watt ratio on the bulb’s packaging. Fluorescent lamps are available in different colors and the color-rendering index is known as the CRI. It runs on a scale of 1 to 100. In addition, the tone and the quality of the color are measured in Kelvin which is a temperature reading.

Installing these fluorescent bubs and fluorescent bulbs offers many advantages. Since they are energy efficient, they help in maintaining a cleaner environment. In addition, they are cost saving. Though they cost more initially, they save money as they last longer and also cut your energy bills.
