Having a guard dog has its benefits. They have a better sense of hearing and smell. A good guard dog also has a great sense of character and if they have to they will even take the roll of security guard. Below are my top picks for best guard dogs. I have either had one as a pet or I Knew some who did.

    1. German shepherd - This breed was originally in Europe from old European shepherd dogs. The German shepherd was originally used for herding before it was used as a police, guard, and guide dogs.

This breed of dog is very intelligent, courageous, keen, alert and fearless. Cheerful, obedient and eager to learn. They can be trained to do just about anything. They are also one of the most loyal and brave dogs you can have. There are many stories of them risking or even giving there lives for humans.

    2. Rottweiler- Originally from Germany the Rottweiler is a muscular, massive, powerful animal, reaching up to 165 pounds in weight. Luckily they are also intelligent. They are smart enough to become guide dogs and police dogs.

This breed is powerful, calm, trainable, courageous, and devoted to their owner and family. They are very trainable, but not as easily as the German shepherd. They can be a little over protective but proper training from a young age can help you avoid this problem. You must be strong mind to own one of these beast or they will be in charge.

    3. Pit bulls- This breed of dog is stocky, strong, power, passion, and undying willingness. Their heads are very board and their necks are thick. Pits have a very high pain tolerance and will defend their family to the death.

Many people will tell you that pit bulls are vicious animals, but the truth is that they are like any other dog. If teach them to be vicious then that’s what they’ll be. When trained right pit bulls are good loyal family dogs. I have seen this with my own eyes. I know at least four people who either had or have pit bulls and they turn out to be the best guard dogs they ever had. Pits are strong minded however and require a strong minded owner.

    4. Bernese mountain dog- This breed of dog was originally from Switzerland where they were used to pull carts. They are large, strong, sturdy, and agile dogs, which is way they are some times used as rescue dogs.

These giant dogs make great family pets. They are cheerful, Self-confident, good-natured and great with kids. They are not overly dominant which make’s them easier to train. They are also rather friendly with strangers, and are generally good with other pets including other dogs. These dogs are sensitive and should be trained firmly, but gently.

5.Boxer- Yet another breed from Germany. Boxers have compact and very powerful bodies. The muzzle is short and blunt and their jaws have an under bite, which gives them a mean look.

Boxers are a very lively breed. They love to run and play. They are also Highly intelligent, eager to please, and quick to learn. They are known for being good with kids and other pets.

The name come’s from the way the Boxer likes to use is front paws for almost everything they do. If you ever watched a Boxer go about his/her business you may have noticed the way he paws at his food bowl, toys, and even your hands when they want attention.

6.Dobermann Pinschers- This breed originally came from Germany and was named after the breeds founder Louis Dobermann. This breed has a compact muscular body. If left natural they develop ears somewhat like a hound.

Doberman Pinschers are very keen, energetic with tremendous amount of strength and stamina. They love people and need human interaction . Their not the type of dog that you just leave in a kennel or back yard all day. They are intelligent and pretty easy to train. However I have found them to be a little needy. They are natural guard dogs and require little training in that department.
