Directory Submission Services
There are thousands of directories, both free and paid, on the Web. While some of them a well-known, such as Yahoo!, DMOZ or BOTW, others may be less popular and less known. There is a tremendous task that a SEO expert is facing to submit the promoted website to various directories, keep track of done/pending submissions, whether the listing is still there and link stays, what title, textual description and other details should be used etc.
You can do directory submission in two ways. The first way is manual, to save your money. Also, it can be more quality for reasons described below. The second way is to use paid directory submission services which are numerous on the web. See below strengths and weaknesses of both.
Manual submissions
1. It takes a lot of time. Ideally, when submitting to different directories, you need to design a unique link title and text description for your website. In this case, your backlinks will look natural in the eyes of Google. If you use mass paid submission, it is pretty difficult to make the submission service use a different or slightly different link title or text.
2. Every submission involves registration and email check. Then, you need to follow certain rules/guidelines which are specific for each new directory. In most cases, you will be asked to identify the right place in the directory where your website belongs. Then, upon submission, you need to wait for approval. Sometimes it takes months…
3. An advantage is that when you submit manually, your links grow naturally. Link will emerge evenly over time, not just out of a sudden, overnight.
4. With manual submission you can have totally unique link titles and texts.
5. A disadvantage, as compared to paid submission, is that for each directory you find, you are not sure that it is still accepting new submissions and listing will be received within reasonable time. For paid submissions, they usually maintain a list of ‘fresh’ directories, which are not abandoned by their owners and a response can be expected soon.
Paid submissions
1. The paid submission services do all the work for you. You don’t need to register/provide your email to each directory. You provide it only to the submission service. Then, after you paid them, they use some kind of software to submit your details to a list of directories they have. Because it is automatic, it can be done very quickly. In one day, your website can be submitted to hundreds of directories.
2. Such a speedy submission can be detrimental in terms of SEO placement as a sharp grow in number of incoming links can be seen as SEO manipulation and lead to a ban or penalty.
3. It is not always possible to use unique titles/text for your links.
4. The submission service usually provides a completion report with a list of directories where your website was submitted. Some of them even let you see this list PRIOR to submission.
5. Some of the submission services allow you a delayed submission, where it is done within certain time period to avoid bans by search engines.
Which to choose, manual or paid, is your decision. I myself use both. In combination they allow to achieve maximum effect and avoid/overcome weaknesses that each of them have.
