This article discusses one of the methods of SEO and web promotion: submission to free or paid directories on the Web. It is a great tool that allows to improve your website popularity and gain a significant number of backlinks to your website. Both free directories and paid directories have some advantages/strengths and disadvantages/weaknesses, which are discussed briefly below.

    Getting backlinks from free or paid directories

    This small article is devoted to an important aspect of search optimization techniques which is called submission to free or paid directories. There are few people in the SEO community who would doubt that inclusion in directories is a great and fully legitimate way to get one-way backlinks. There are several advantages gained when your website is included in a directory:

    1. Many directories are high authority websites, such as the paid Yahoo! Directory, or free DMOZ. You may receive significant authority from a such link (or Pagerank or pagerank juice as it is often called)

    2. In most cases, a link from a Directory would be a one-way link, that is, you don’t need to put a reciprocal link onto your website.

    3. Your website’s link is usually approved in a specific category which, in the eyes of the Directory, best suits the topic of your website. This goes well in line with the proclaimed principle that incoming links should be from pages which are relevant to your topic.

    4. With big directories, such as Yahoo! or DMOZ, it is possible to observe a multiplication effect. It is where adding a link to Yahoo! directory would also create links in its sister or geo-targeted directories, such as yahoo.ca or yahoo.co.nz. Also, there are hundreds of websites that borrow pages of big directories as the source of their content. After you add your website to DMOZ, you will be surprised to find a link to your website on various websites. And it stays as long as your DMOZ listing stays.

    What are disadvantages or tricks? There are many of them too.

    1. It is pretty difficult to get listed in the free-of-charge DMOZ, as their editors are lazy and picky. You may need to wait years for inclusion and still don’t get it.

    2. Paid directories can be quite expensive. Yahoo! annual listing is US$299 for example.

    3. I have seen directories which remove your listing after some time after submission. I don’t know exactly their reasons, the first coming to my mind is that there are just email address fishing tools. All they need is your email address you provide during registration. Then they sell it to spammers.

    4. Many directories are overcrowded. With thousands of websites submitted/included, they usually create a numbered structure, in which you can be website #999 on page 99. Usually, such page would not have any Pagerank at all.

    5. There was a hype that Google has discontinued to like directories. Only few of them have Pagerank on internal pages.

    The best advice I think I never gotten about directories is to use a service that will submit to a bunch of them and be done with them. Only a few are worth your own time. But don't put to much into it. There are better ways to market a website.
