SEO is an abbreviation that has come to existence about a decade ago, with the rise of search engines as major sources of web traffic and visitors. Now that Yahoo! and then Google have taken the niche of the key players and currently are defining the rules, every webmaster has to learn what the rules are, what should be done and what must be avoided. For larger business projects and websites now there is a permanent SEO budget, which can significantly increase the audience and sales.
There are hundreds of companies on the Web who offer SEO services. Because of the nature of the Web, where buyers and sellers may be thousands miles away from one another, it can be difficult to tell which SEO offer is good and legitimate, and which one is a scam, or may just be unprofessional.
Historically, there has been two types of SEO: so-called White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO. Kind of white and black magic. The White SEO experts claim that they don’t use methods which can harm your website positions in serps, don’t manipulate search engines results etc. The black hat guys of course do not say ‘we use black hat seo’ and we are bad. They just do it by omission because the root cause that makes the difference between white hat SEO and black hat SEO is the cost. Doing things right, with such activities as carefully planned link exchange with selected websites, or manual submission to directories with unique texts in your link title takes a LOT of time and effort. Black hat SEO is just doing it quickly and with little effort.
