    It is no secret that a link exchange is not always beneficial, often it can damage the ranking of a website. Currently search engines have been increasingly concerned about the cleanness of the Internet (Runet is no exception) and tend to ‘punish’ websites for unfair promotion techniques. A proper exchange of links in recent years has become an art, there are webmasters who earn their living from just doing a link exchange. Let’s try to understand some of their tricks...

    A few key points to be followed to attract more links to our website:

    1. Learn the principles why Webmaster are or may get interested to exchange links with other websites;

    2. Examine the trends of link exchange within your website’s topic;

    3. Choose or invent a new way to share and attract links to your website;

    4. Get inbound links to your website!

    Let's look at some of the ideas which will help us to organize a better link exchange, and, eventually, if we decide to sell links from our website:

    Be sure to use a variety of 'anchor' texts for the links to your website. For example, if the desired search phrase for the website is ‘real estate in Moscow’, it is best to think up a semantic kernel for links. ‘Real estate in Moscow and Moscow region’, ‘buy an apartment in Moscow’, ‘rent in Moscow’ etc. In general, we should not repeat the phrases too often. Nevertheless, you should use your keywords in links. Even a link with ‘Click here!’ text would be ok, and will give value to your website, unless it is coming from a website with erotic content.

    You will need to spread links evenly along the webpage, that is, a couple of links at the top of the page, a few more in the middle and some at the bottom of the page, but in no case should they all be together at the very bottom, in small font size, or in barely visible color. In this case, the search engines simply will not take them into account, or can even ‘punish’ the website with a ban which means vurtually a death of the website.

    Place the links slowly and gradually. Let the search engines include the links to the new website. It all depends on the size of the website, for example, if naturally a website gains about 10 links a week, a sharp increase to 100 links a day would be suspicious, which could lead again to penalties against our website.

    Links to our site must be placed on pages with different popularity. That is, about 10-15% of the links should be placed on pages with PR5-6, the others with a lower PR: this would make it seem much more natural. So buy a link with care, think twice, or rely on more experienced webmaster.

    I advise you to carefully select the topic and links which you sell from your pages. Adult-related websites, casinos or pharmaceuticals are topics notorious for sending spam, and search engines when finding links to such websites may see your website as a ‘bad’ one too.

    You should also think about placing links from different IP C-classes. Search engines ‘see’ it easily and, for example, the entire ring of websites can get banned overnight.

    Natural would be to get links from websites of different ages, both newer and older ones, which are usually more trusted websites. The same rule applies to the engines which are used for Content Management Systems on donor websites. Despite the high popularity of some, try to get a variety of ‘donor websites’.

    You can also think about a ‘triple’ link exchange, where the link is received from a website that does not link back to yours. It may seem similar to a network of websites (or ring), but since you are not linking to the first website, no ban can be expected. Of course, it's only worth doing if the promoted website is very important in terms of revenues. For example, a business card website of a real estate agency.

    It is worth thinking about promoting not only the main page, but also internal pages. If the website is small, you can promote all the pages; otherwise only the pages or sections of the utmost importance should be promoted.

    The age of links is very important for website promotion, so you should try to buy links on longest period basis possible.

    Do not mark the page sections with links as ‘Advertising’, ‘Sponsors’, ‘All Rights Reserved’ as such words are tracked by search engines and links can be ignored.

    Place the links in the same language as the site's content. Because large search engines such as Google, are doing the search based on location which may affect the SERP.
