The Different Types of Bets in Texas Hold’em
Forced Bets – these are bets that one or more players are made to make to establish the games pot. They must be made before the first cards are dealt. The forced bets that are included in Texas Hold'em are called “blinds” or “blind bets” and there are usually two of them. They are known as the “big blind” and the “little blind”, which are explained in detail on our How To Play Texas Hold'em Part One page under the “Pre-flop” section.
Check Bets – Checking signifies the player does not bet, but retains the right to call or raise if needed later in the round. This cannot be done in the first round that includes “blind bets.” A player signifies a “check” by tapping on the table.
“Check-raise” is another type of check bet. This is when a player initially “checks” with the
intentions of enticing other players acting after them to bet. They will then raise the bet when it their time to act. This is used for attracting more players into the pot.
Raise Bets – this is a bet made which increases the original bet needed to stay in the pot. All players who want to stay in the hand must “call” the new bet or “fold” their cards.
“Re-raise” is another type of raise bet. It is done when a player “raises” the bet after it has been “raised” by a player before him. There is normally a limit to the amount of raises allowed per round set by the establishment.
Fold Bets– this is not actually a bet, but an “action” taken by players. If they do not want to
continue in the hand, they surrender their cards and give up their involvement in the pot.
Call Bets – this is when a player equals a previous bet or raise made by another player in the hand. Once all players have called, the hand is complete.
These are the forms of bets made during a game of Texas Hold'em. There are different

The Three Hold'em Poker Table Positions
Your position on the Texas Hold’em poker table makes all the difference in the world, as to how you play each hand. You will hear many other players talking about “position” when discussing poker, but do you know what they mean? If you do not know what it is, you can easily lose money when you should not. Position is your seat location in relation to the dealer’s button. The dealer’s button is the small disc that moves from player to player, clockwise around the table, and determines who must place the small and big blinds.
The Three Hold'em Poker Table Positions
You can basically break the Hold'em poker table down into three sections as follows:
NOTE: This discussion is using a full ten-player table as an example. You can break the table
down with fewer players also. If you did this, each section would contain fewer players.
Early Position – these players are the first to act in a round of poker. This includes the two blind players and the next two players to their left. The first player to the left of the two blind players is called “Under The %link2% Gun” or UTG, because this is the very first player that must act when the betting begins.
Early positions are often considered bad positions, because you will be one of the first to act.
The other players after you will be reacting to your play. They can disrupt or exploit your play,
since they are in the fortunate position to watch how your play. You should play better
(stronger) hands while playing in early positions. This includes hands that can stand up against a raise or several raises.
Middle Position – these are the next three players to the left of the early position players. This is also considered, in most cases, to not be a good position to be in. You do have the advantage of seeing the actions of the early position players, but the late position players are also watching you. These players will act after you do, which gives them a competitive edge over you and the early position players. Be careful not to get caught in the middle (squeeze play) of calling an early position player, and being raised by a late player.
Late Position - these are the last three players to act in all poker hands. This includes the very last player (best position), who is on the button (known as “the button”), the second to last player (known as “the cut-off”), and the player to his right. These three positions are the best positions to have during a poker hand. You have the advantage of watching all other players act, before it is your turn to.
This is one of the best positions to be in for bluffing. You can often steal pots simply by making a bet while in one of the late positions. You can play more drawing hands while playing late positions also. If you have a strong hand in late position, you can easily create a bigger pot by simply calling the bets of the earlier players and not raising. This will bring more players (and money) into the pot.
Every hand is different in the game of Texas Hold'em poker and your position during each hand is very important. Be aware of your table position at all times, before playing in the hand. When you first play, you may have trouble remembering this, but after practice it will become second nature.

you know your hand is inferior and not the best hand. You are being deceptive to your

It is better to have fewer players in the pot when you bluff.
You should bluff against players who play tight. It is a good idea to bluff on the river.
Bluffing can be done when you are one of the last to act in the hand, and all other players have checked. You can bluff when there is a low pair on the board or the community cards represent a “possible” good hand, such as three suited cards.
Bluffing is easier in high limit poker games than low limit ones. You have better chances of bluffing when you mix you style of play up. “tells.” If you are able to read tells from other players, or give tells (on purpose) to them, you
can be very successful and win more playing Texas Hold’em poker. A tell is a physical reaction, behavior, or habit that supplies opponents with information about your hand. If you can successfully master the art of tells, you can succeed in Texas Hold’em poker.
There are many behaviors, reactions, and habits that players will provide you with, as long as
you are watching for them. You also must remember this: as you are watching them, they are
watching you. Tells work both ways, you pick them up from other players, and they pick them
up from you. The important thing to keep in mind is to always be aware of what the other
players are doing, as well as what YOU are. Another possibility, especially if you are playing with advanced players, is they will purposely send out the wrong tells to trick you. Keep this in mind as you read the following and put it to work in a poker game. Common Texas Hold’em Poker Tells

Players Hands – watch for a hand that shakes or trembles. This most often means they have a strong hand and are nervous and excited about it. Another hand observation is if they keep
their hands over their hole cards or look at them often, this could mean they are subconsciously trying to protect a good hand.
Repetitive Behavior – several poker players will play the same hand, the same way, over and over. Make a note of how each player plays different hands.
Opposite Play – you will find players who will play aggressively when they have weak hands, and then play tight when they have strong ones. They could also look disinterested in the pot when they have good cards, and then try to be intimidating and forceful when they have bad ones. These are just a few of the multiple poker tells that players exhibit. If you learn to watch for them, you can know a lot about your fellow players.
