They have braved every situation with their ferociousness, courage and intelligence. Dogs have always been ardent followers of human beings. It is their natural instinct to please their masters. Man has been utilizing their willingness for critical battle related services. The Romans have been expertly deploying war trained dogs to their optimum benefits. In fact, some units and battalions of Roman Army were purely constituted of fighter dogs only. They had spiky collars and sharp knives around their ankles and necks. They were often made to starve for many days altogether and then made to run after enemies thus making them pounce and shred them mercilessly.
The breed of Roman Molossians dogs were appalling canines that played great roles in the battles held during 9th century. They were dreaded by enemies on the battlefield. They were trained specially to fight fierce battles expertly. Much before Romans used dogs for taking part in wars and battles, other civilizations such as Greeks and Babylonians and also employed them in fighting against their enemies. In fact, Babylonian king Hammurabi also had massive war dogs in his army. During First World War, about thirty thousand dogs were used by Germans, twenty thousand by French and about three thousand war dogs by Italian armies. They used their sharp senses to the benefits of their masters and had huge trustworthiness to their credibility by the time of Second World War.
Mastiff dogs have great place in history as remarkable war dogs. They have been depicted as so daring and ferocious that they supposedly hunted lions in the desert of Tigris River valley. They were first introduced as war dogs in 6th century BC in old Britain. These dogs accompanied their master-soldiers to war fields and protected them from enemies. Mastiff dogs also acted as agile guards of prisoners and properties.
