Just like in today’s armies there were many positions to be filled in the Roman army besides just being a soldier. They had clerks, musicians, surveyors, stone cutters, and more. In total the roman army had over 150 specialist. Below is a small list of these specialist positions and what they did.
Clerks
Clerks dealt with all the paper of the roman army. Clerks kept accounts of the soldiers pay, stores, and land owned by legion, which was usually rented out to farmers for corn and other goods. They also look after soldiers wills and properties after they have past.

Medical officers and Orderlies
Medical officers and orderlies who were usually of Greek descent were part of every Roman legion. Their main job was healing wounded soldiers hurt in battle. This usually meant getting wood and metal splinters out wounds and performing amputations. They had a good amount of knowledge of drugs and were great surgeons for their time, but had little knowledge of how diseases were caused.
Musicians
A musicians job was to play salutes to senior officers and to signal orders. They always marched at the head of the army. They would be receive orders from commanders and sound the proper signal with their instruments.
Baggage masters
Baggage masters made sure that all workshop and headquarters material was pack properly for safe transporting.
Centurions
Centurions were the disciplinarians of the roman army. Centurions would punish for things like dirty armor, being late for duty, deserting and more. Punishment raged from standing outside of headquarters all day with out their armor or weapons, to being reduced in rank, flogging or death for more serious crimes.
