War Horses
Animals of all sorts have always had a part to play in wars. Most of them like
horses, donkeys, and camels were used to transport soldiers and supplies. Others like the elephant were used like modern day tanks. They trample enemy soldiers while archers riding on it's back would pick them off. Some animals like the dogs were and still are used as warning, for rescues, and for finding bombs.

One of the first animals to be used in war was the horse. Horses made it possible for armies to move quickly. They could carry horses into war in the form of a cavalry, they could pull wagons carrying supplies or loot, they could be ridden by messengers or scouts news to and from generals.
The first people to use horses might have been the Assyrians around 800 B.C. for hunting, and for cavalry, but some resources I used believed that nomadic tribes were the first. These nomadic warriors valued speed and agility above all else in their horses.
Most ancient armies used horses in both light and heavy cavalry. Light cavalry horses were smaller and faster. They had some times wore protective helmets. They usually carried archers and light infantry into battle.
The heavy cavalry had big strong horses. These horses wore mail armor or heavy leather armor. Their riders were also heavier armed with lances, spears, and heavy armor. Bigger horses were also used to carry knights.
Horses were used in war as recent as world war two. When WWI began both Germany and Britain had a cavalry force that included 100,000 men each. However trench warfare made cavalry charges impossible. At the end of WWI over 8 million horses had died on all sides. During WWII horses were still some times used to carry supplies, but were no longer used in battle.
